Preparing for the Transition to EMV Payments
Prior to EMV, also known as Chip and PIN, European merchants were required to obtain telephone authorizations for each transaction, which was extremely expensive. So, card issuers formed EMVCo, to address both the telecommunications costs and increasing rates of counterfeit fraud.
